The benefits of space to the Middle East and North Africa region are undeniable, yet there is no single representative body to champion the sector. The near total inexistence of coordination or even collaboration has resulted in calls for the creation of a Pan-Arab Space Agency, to operate and coordinate programs in a comparable manner to the European Space Agency (ESA).

Newtec – the Belgian company specialising in designing, developing, and manufacturing equipment and technologies for satellite communications – and Arab Satellite Communications (Arabsat) have signed a new multi-million Euro contract, expanding their long-term partnership.

Qatar’s Es’hailSat satellite communications company has purchased outright the satellite it has been sharing with Eutelsat - EUTELSAT-25B/Es'hail-1 - taking full control of the satellite now just named Es'hail-1. The purchase comes as the Qatari company awaits the launch later this year of Es'hail-2, built by Japanese satellite manufacturer Mitsubishi Electric Company (MELCO).

The Bahrain News Agency has reported that the Kingdom is expected to launch its first satellite within the next two years. The country’s Space Agency has been dedicated to assembling an expert team that will oversee its development.

Arabsat will assist U.S.-based company Cloud Constellation Corporation in providing space-based cloud data storage with the aim of improving data storage security.

The Azeri ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Shahin Abdullayev, has told reporters that Azerbaijan seeks to enter into cooperative agreements with Saudi Arabia in satellite technology, petrochemicals, energy, agriculture, and tourism. “We launched two satellites and we reached advanced levels in this sector. We aim to be among the top producers of satellite parts,” Ambassador Abdullayev told the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on 23 March 2018.

The Greek space agency – known formally as the Hellenic Space Agency – was officially announced on Monday, 19 March, 2018, in Athens by the Greek Minister for Digital Policy and Media, Nikos Pappas, and the General Secretary of Telecommunications and Post, Vassilis Maglaras.
