Imagine walking on a remote beach away from the polluting lights of a city. You look up and see thousands upon thousands of stars blanketing the heavens, bisected by the pale glow of our Milky Way—the galactic disc in which we live. You pick up a grain of sand and hold it at arms’ length to cover a minuscule portion of the night sky. What might lie in that tiny patch?

NASA has published the James Webb Space Telescope’s deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant Universe so far, known as Webb’s First Deep Field, an image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723. The image contains thousands of galaxies, including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared part of the spectrum.

NASA’s Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE) CubeSat, designed to test a unique lunar orbit, successfully launched on Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket. The spacecraft acts as a pathfinder for Gateway, NASA’s lunar space station supporting the Artemis program.

NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have selected three design concept proposals for a fission surface power system design to advance space nuclear technologies, NASA said. The design could launch by the end of the decade for a lunar demonstration. The contracts are valued at approximately US $5 million each and will fund the development of initial design concepts.

The developer, owner and operator of the Arnhem Space Centre (ASC), Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA), successfully completed Australia’s first commercial space launch on the Gove Peninsula in Australia’s Northern Territory, in cooperation with NASA, ELA reported. The BBIX rocket launch was NASA’s first launch from a fully commercial spaceport and the first of three rocket launches.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher signed two agreements at the latest ESA Council meeting in Noordwijk, Netherlands, to advance cooperation on Earth science and the Artemis lunar missions, NASA said. ESA’s Lunar Pathfinder mission will contribute to the progression of the lunar communications infrastructure, necessary for a long-term human presence.

Astra failed to launch two NASA weather monitoring cubesats on Sunday, 12th June due to a premature shut down of the rocket’s upper stage. Astra said it would provide more information after the completion of the full data review. Astra’s LV0010 (Rocket 3.3) vehicle launched after a terminated initial attempt due to an issue with the liquid oxygen propellant.
