Ibadan, 31 May 2023. – The United States Department of State has released a Strategic Framework for Space Diplomacy to advance U.S. global space leadership. Through this Framework, the Department will expand international cooperation on mutually beneficial space activities, including through the Artemis Accords and commitments against destructive anti-satellite missile tests. Furthermore, the Department will encourage responsible behaviour, strengthen understanding and support for U.S. national space policies, and promote international use of U.S. space capabilities.
The Department currently plays a vital role in building international partnerships for current U.S. space undertakings, including the James Webb Space Telescope, NASA’s Artemis missions, and the Department of Commerce’s Space Traffic Coordination System. As a result, the Strategic Framework provides a critical foundation for its work, grounded in U.S. strategic objectives and values. Furthermore, the Department commits to expanding space benefits for all humankind by engaging allies and partners who share its democratic values of openness, transparency, adaptability, and the free flow of ideas and information.
As near-earth space gets more crowded, the Framework will help maintain the rules-based international order and foster cooperation for long-term sustainability, commercialization, exploration, and space utilization. In addition, the Department will work with its interagency partners to ensure U.S. leadership in this new collaborative space era.
In pursuit of these principles, the actions in the strategic Framework will ensure the Department fulfils its mission to advance the United States’ claim to the position of a global space leader, working alongside its allies and partners for peaceful purposes, utilizing space to benefit society, and exploring the Moon, Mars, and beyond to continue expanding humanity’s knowledge and awareness of our surroundings and the vast expanse of the universe.
