With the recent inclusion of satellite into the 3GPP standards and 5G, the vision of a truly global communications ecosystem for 5G and beyond services is set to take off. Satellite networks offer any place, real time connectivity across the globe. As we evolve later this decade to 6G and the internet of the senses, we can expect to see an ever increasing role of satellite networks as part of the global communications ecosystem. However, to ensure that this vision is realized, it is critical that governments around the world begin to look at spectrum management in a new light – one that is technology inclusive and three dimensional in nature.
