Airbus and OneWeb connect European governments and armies

Paris, 14 December 2021 – Airbus partners with OneWeb to provide Low Earth Orbit (LEO) communication services for military and governmental use, the companies said.

Airbus and OneWeb plan to develop a complete range of secure services dedicated to the specific needs of armed forces for all their operations on land, at sea, and in the air. Airbus will utilise OneWeb´s satellite constellation to service European and UK armed forces, civil protection and security forces, starting still this year, Airbus said.

The partnership will offer services to connect vehicles on the ground, battleships at sea and aircrafts in flight and designed to support future multi-domain cloud applications and enable information superiority. Users can switch between LEO and GEO satellite capacities.

Airbus designs and builds OneWeb´s satellites at the Airbus OneWeb facility in Florida. After an initial start of service over the Arctic area from the North Pole to the 50th parallel OneWeb expects its services to be available with global coverage of the Earth by the end of 2022 with a constellation of 648 satellites in orbit, Airbus said.
