Global, moderiert.

In this Space Cafe German edition, Andreas Schepers talked with Daniel Metzler,, co-founder and CEO of Isar Aerospace, who provided insights into the development and future of the launcher start-up.

As of today, Isar Aerospace has 170 employees. According to Metzler, these are mainly young professionals who are often hired directly from universities. A locational advantage as a German company: While it is hardly possible for non-Americans to work in the US space industry on the development of launch vehicles, IsarAerospace is open to international talents.

The Spectrum, the launch vehicle developed by IsarAerospace, is designed to carry up to 1000kg of payload into LEO. The first flight is planned for 2022, and the first rockets are already being built. Metzler pointed out that the entire launcher is an in-house development and will be manufactured using the most modern, fully automated processes. The high degree of automation should also enable a very high launch cadence in the future.

Addressing the potential market, Metzler sees a growing demand for constellations and small satellites. Important fields of application are earth observation and communication. By winning the DLR’s Micro Launcher Challenge, Isar Aerospace has found an important, institutional anchor customer for the first launch.

Metzler is optimistic that his company will be successful in the international competition and points to the progress made in the development of the spectrum and the great interest shown by customers. Of the more than 100 launcher start-ups worldwide, only a few are as far along as IsarAerospace.

Space Café Germany, which took place on 8 July 2021, was moderated by Andreas Schepers, a friend of SpaceWatch.Global.
