EU presents its vision for digital transformation by 2030

Luxembourg, 11 March 2021. – The European Commission has presented its vision and approaches for Europe’s digital transformation by 2030.

The ”vision for the EU’s digital decade” is based on four pillars: skills, government, infrastructures, and business, the Commission said on Tuesday.

The four areas are part of Europe’s Digital Compass which will translate the EUʼs digital ambitions for 2030 in concrete terms, it said.

The challenges that the paper mentions for “(s)ecure and sustainable digital infrastructures” are: “Gigabit for everyone”, “5G everywhere”, doubling the EU share in the global semiconductor production, 10,000 “climate neutral highly secure edge nodes”, and the first computer with quantum acceleration.

The document names 6G, Quantum and the use of technology to fight climate change and environmental challenges as potential areas of partnerships.

To reach the objectives set by the Digital Compass, the European Commission wants to accelerate and facilitate the launch of multi-country projects, building on the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the Cohesion Funds and other EU funding.

The Commission says it intends to propose a Digital Policy program operationalizing the Digital Compass by the end of the summer and plans an inter-institutional declaration on Digital Principles by end the of 2021.
