Ibadan, 1 December 2022. – Applications are open for the 2023 Edition of the International Space Weather Camp (ISWC). The International Space Weather Camp provides an incredible opportunity for students from South Africa, the USA, and Germany to learn about space weather, a relatively new and exciting field involving the study of the Sun and its influence on space and the Earth’s upper atmosphere as well as the impacts of solar events on space and ground-based technological systems that modern society relies on daily.

The Camp consists of a series of lectures, hands-on projects, and other interesting activities. Furthermore, the lecture subject matter covers various aspects related to Space Weather. This includes cosmic ray particle transport theory, plasma physics, solar physics, heliospheric physics, computer simulations for modeling and understanding local Space Weather, and the impact on Earth’s atmosphere, satellites, and space.

The ISWC will take place in two parts, with the first part taking place at the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) Hermanus facility from 24 June to 7 July 2023. The second part will hold at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, USA, from 8 – 23 July 2023. Successful applicants are expected to take part in both parts of the camp.

The ISWC offers students a great platform to interact and engage with students and researchers from around the world. During the Camp, students will also get an opportunity to learn about historic and current developments of space activities in South Africa, Germany, and the USA.

Applicants must be final year BEng/BSc Hon or Masters students in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Electronics and must be South African citizens or permanent residents.

Successful applicants will receive full funding to participate in the ISWC 2023. Funding will include visa applications, flights, accommodation, ground transportation, and subsistence. Furthermore, successful applicants must have a full vaccination status before starting the camp as per US Travel policy. As a result, the organizers will require a vaccination certificate as proof.

Applications will close on 17 February 2023. In addition, the organizers advise that applicants may consider their applications unsuccessful if they do not hear back within a month.
