Ibadan, 16 October 2024. – Odysseus Space has announced the deployment of its first commercial Optical Ground Station (OGS) in a partnership with Leaf Space, a Ground Segment as a Service (GSaaS) company with a network of 26 ground stations spanning 16 locations.

This agreement symbolizes the expansion of Odysseus’ Cyclops™ LCaaS™(Laser Communication as a Service) and Leaf Space GSaaS capabilities, enabling fast and secure data transfer between EO satellite constellations and ground infrastructure.

Consequently, the first Odysseus commercial OGS will be in Montsec, Cataluña, Spain. Furthermore, Odysseus plans to deploy an OGS network by 2026 and deliver to customers a downlink capacity of 1TB per day with Cyclops™ LCaaS™ solution. With its first OGS, Odysseus will leverage Leaf Space’s existing infrastructure, enhancing global space-to-ground data transfer through Odysseus’ proprietary Cyclops-GT, a Ground Terminal optimized to receive data from satellites with Odysseus’ Cyclops-DTE space laser communication terminal.

Additionally, this partnership represents a strategic step towards supporting Leaf Space’s global Leaf Line network, a hybrid network of ground stations developed for optical and radio frequency communications. As a result, Odysseus and Leaf Space are aiming to break the space communication status quo by combining their leading new space generation expertise in laser communication and ground station segments, to guarantee an integrated space-to-ground data transfer solution that allows customers to retrieve large amounts of data without dealing with multiple vendors.

“This marks a major step in reducing the complexity and cost of direct space-to-ground optical communication. By integrating our Cyclops™ LCaaS™ with Leaf Space’s network, we’re offering an end-to-end solution comprising both the hardware and data service, making it easier and more affordable for customers to access large volumes of satellite data,” explained Jordan Vannitsen, Co-founder & CEO of Odysseus Space
