IAC 2024 | Nobu Okada and Nick Shave of Astroscale on active debris removal

At the 75th IAC in Milan, Astroscale CEO Nobu Okada and Managing Director Nick Shave discussed the company’s pioneering efforts in space debris removal. Astroscale aims to create a circular economy in space, with two missions: the first deep removal technology demonstration and the world’s first real debris inspection satellite.

The UK office, with 200 employees, is manufacturing the Elsa M mission, set to launch in 2026, marking the world’s first satellite removal. The conversation highlighted the importance of global cooperation, regulatory frameworks, and the commercial potential of in-orbit servicing, including refueling and recycling.
