Global Technologies, an international full service technology company has signed a multi-year contract with Eutelsat Communications for C-band capacity on the EUTELSAT 8 West B satellite in order to upgrade the mobile and Internet network of Mattel, a subsidiary of Tunisie Télécom and Mauritania’s leading mobile operator.

In order to deliver improved Internet access and service quality, particularly in areas isolated from terrestrial networks, Mattel is calling on the expertise of the Global Technologies Group to overhaul its very small aperture terminal (VSAT) network. The Group is driving this complex modernisation project in partnership with Eutelsat, from design phase to nationwide deployment of a state-of-the-art solution for Mattel.

Jean-Paul Steinitz, CEO of Global Technologies, said: “To support Mattel in its approach to foster widespread access to mobile and Internet services in Mauritania, we have teamed up with one of the leading satellite operators, Eutelsat, to leverage the prime capacity available on its EUTELSAT 8 West B satellite, which was launched last year.”

Michel Azibert, Eutelsat’s Chief Commercial and Development Officer, added: “This contract positions EUTELSAT 8 West B on the Mauritanian market for the first time.In the future, we would like to replicate the partnership model that has been set up with Global Technologies in Mauritania on other markets.”

How it works

Distributed across Mauritania, VSAT dishes measuring between 2.5 and 4.5 metres are used to connect mobile telephony and Internet base stations to the EUTELSAT 8 West B satellite, without any need for terrestrial networks.

Marketing in outer space seems like an innovative idea, but it has 60+ years of history. Dr. Wernher von Braun, former Marshall Space Flight Center Director, pointed out on July 22, 1969: "Because without public relations we would have been unable to do it". Today, accelerated access to space provides unprecedented opportunities for #advertising stunts and viral marketing. Some campaigns raise ethical, environmental, and regulatory concerns, while others champion sustainability.
