Kratos Integral Systems Europe (ISE), a subsidiary of San Diego, California-based Kratos Defense and Security Solutions, Inc., successfully completed the critical design review (CDR) for the Sultanate of Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) Advanced Space Radio Monitoring System.

Oman’s TRA led the CDR supported by Kratos ISE personnel, and its completion demonstrates that the design of the Advanced Space Radio Monitoring System is mature, and it opens the path for the fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing of the system.

The Advanced Space Radio Monitoring System will provide Oman with the capability to monitor the use of satellite spectrum in the L-, C-, Ku-, X-, and Ka-frequency bands. The system will consist of a facility and several earth stations, as well as a mobile vehicle that will provide analysis capabilities for both earth-to-space and space-to-earth signals, and an airborne spectrum analysing solution.

The Advanced Space Radio Monitoring System will utilize Kratos ISE’s geographical monitoring (GeoMon) concept that monitors the spectrum looking for the location of users up-linking to satellites, and that, “allows regulators to supervise satcoms [satellite communications] transmitted from their country.”

The Kratos ISE GeoMon concept is designed specifically for use by telecommunication regulators.

Yousuf Al-Balushi, Vice President for Spectrum Management Affairs for Oman’s TRA, said that, “The Kratos solution has been selected because of Kratos’ extensive experience in the arena of space radio monitoring systems. The SRMS [Advanced Space Radio Monitoring System] will enable us to better manage the satellite spectrum used in the Sultanate and provide for improved cooperation with other telecommunications regulatory agencies.”

Speaking on behalf of Kratos ISE, its president, Brono Dupas, said, “We are extremely pleased with the results of the CDR. Satellite spectrum is a national security asset that can be subject to unauthorized usage, interference and other threats. The GeoMon solution will allow TRA to monitor and geolocate satellite radio frequency transmissions with operations automated for LEO and GEO satellites in all bands.”

Kratos ISE offers turnkey ground segment solutions that includes satellite and terrestrial communications signal monitoring systems, equipment and network management, and payload management solutions.

Its parent company, Kratos Defense and Security Solutions, Inc., provides solutions for mostly government clients in the areas of unmanned systems, satellite communications, microwave electronics, cyber security and warfare, missile defence and combat systems.
