The 2026 European Commission Work Program has disclosed the European Space Shield, an initiative seeking to reinforce Member States' defense capabilities and secure the resilience and protection of space assets and services in response to an increasingly hostile threat environment.
To be formally launched in the second quarter of 2026, the initiative forms part of the broader effort to achieve European defense readiness by 2030 through the integration of national and commercial space assets, with support from existing EU space systems.
