SGAC Announces 8th African Space Generation Workshop

Ibadan, 19 June 2024. – The Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) has announced its 8th annual African Space Generation Workshop (AF-SGW). The Space Generation Workshop will hold at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) Abuja, Nigeria, on the 20th and 21st of November 2024 with the theme: The Future of Africa’s Space Industry: Capacity Building For Sustainable Development.

The two-day regional workshop will bring together students, young professionals, industry experts and government stakeholders from Africa. Likewise, it will provide an unparalleled opportunity for the future leaders of Africa’s space sector to proactively establish strong relationships, exchange ideas and knowledge, and collaborate on novel ways in which Africa can utilize the benefits of space technology for Africa.

The workshop aims to raise awareness of the benefits of space, exchange know-how, and share best practices among stakeholders. Furthermore, it will facilitate public participation and provide an excellent opportunity for students and young professionals to network with each other and experts towards leading to future research and business partnerships and stimulating the interest among the next generation of African space professionals.

During the workshop, participants will be in different working groups (WGs), each focusing on a specific sub-theme broadly covering Space Applications, Space Policy and Law, Space Technology, Capacity building and Space Business Opportunities. All discussions from the working groups will produce recommendations to relevant public, private, and non-governmental sectors. Furthermore, SGAC will present the reports and recommendations at high-level conferences and include them in its annual report to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS).

Delegates Application’ will be open from July 1st – 31st after which Selected Delegates can register from August 15. SGAC consequently invites students and young professionals between 18 to 35 years old (as of November 2024) who are passionate about the space industry.

The assembly counted around 2800 participants from over 60 countries with attendees engaging with scientists, presenting over 3000 talks and posters, and participating in 150 scientific events. The Assembly brought space leaders from KASA, NASA, CNSA, ISRO, JAXA, ASI, and the UAE together, with the roundtable of Space Agency leaders featuring the next decade of space science programs from each agency.
