This is the second part of an op-end article reflecting the EuroDefense network ongoing work from several national chapters with the objective to recommend a common ambitious high-level vision for European advancement in the Space Domain as it proves critical to Europe’s prosperity, security and defence.   Europe should build a space strategic culture that accentuates its strengths, minimizes its weaknesses and articulates and justifies its goals to the world and to itself.

The French government expressed its decision to join the direct-ascent ASAT (DASAT) testing ban initiative launched by the United States of America to save Earth orbits from  further hazardous debris. The French Government’s aim with this step is to promote a “safe, stable space environment.”

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) have agreed to collaborate under the “Space Law for New Space Actors” project. The collaboration will include a technical advisory mission to Nairobi, Kenya, in the first half of 2023 to provide capacity-building and legal advisory services tailored to regulatory authorities in Kenya.

Kayhan Space, a leading provider of spaceflight safety solutions, has announced receipt of the largest in the latest series of advanced industry grants from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT). The award is to accelerate the development of coordinated autonomous satellite collision avoidance capabilities for its Pathfinder Max software platform.

Electro Optic Systems’ subsidiary, EOS Defense Systems USA (EOSDS USA) has been awarded two contracts by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) government agency’s Office of Space Commerce, EOS said. The first of these contracts will enable commercial satellite laser ranging (SLR) data for NOAA’s Open Architecture Data Repository. Meanwhile, the second contract will provide passive electro-optical observations. 

Advanced construction technologies and large-scale 3D printing company ICON, has been awarded a US $57.2 million contract as part of Phase III of NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, ICON said. The award builds on NASA’s and the Department of Defense’s previous funding for ICON’s Project Olympus. Under this project, the company carried out research and development of space-based construction systems to support lunar exploration and beyond. 

ispace, inc., a global lunar exploration company, has announced that it has completed launch preparations, including integration of the HAKUTO-R Mission 1 lunar lander into the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. As a result, the lunar lander is now scheduled to take off on Thursday, December 1, 2022. The tentative launch time is 08: 37 GMT (3:37 a.m. EST) and it will launch from SLC-40, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida.
