Airbus will place a dedicated Ultra High Frequency (UHF) military payload onboard Eutelsat’s 36D satellite to serve Europe’s and NATO’s armed forces, Airbus said. Military UHF satcoms are used by the armed forces for operations on land, at sea and in the air, Airbus said.

The European Union (EU) will invest nearly €9 billion in European space programs over the period of 2021 to 2027, the European Space Agency (ESA) said. EU and ESA signed a new Financial Framework Partnership Agreement (FFPA), “for ESA and European industry to design new-generation systems and programmes, crucial for the economy and a green and digital Europe”, ESA said.

Italian line-up: The Italian Ministry of Defense awarded Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio to build its secure Sicral 3 satellite and ground system, Thales announced. Covering the development of phases B and C, the contract is worth a total of approximately €159 million, Thales said.

NATO’s defense spendings are likely to increase driven by expansion into space, the data and analytics group GlobalData. The comment follows the news that NATO leaders have declared that “attacks in, to and from space against any member will now trigger the mutual defense agreement and obligate allied members to respond”, GlobalData said.
