Arabsat Sign MoU for Satellite-Enabled Disaster Response

Ibadan, 2 August 2024. – Arabsat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization to develop flexible and scalable satellite solutions to enhance disaster response capabilities.

Eng. Alhamedi Alanezi, CEO & President of Arabsat, and Dr. Saleh bin Hamad Al-Tuwaijri, Secretary-General of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization, signed the MoU. This initiative is part of Arabsat’s ongoing efforts to provide satellite broadcasting services that improve connectivity among communities and contribute to an effective service model for Arab populations. Furthermore, the initiative focuses on facilitating communication and reducing disaster risk.

Key areas of cooperation include enabling satellite connectivity to support rapid disaster response, assisting in disaster management and preparedness, and promptly implementing urgent requirements. Additionally, the partnership will allocate a dedicated satellite network to ensure stakeholders can respond promptly to disasters. The MoU also entails joint efforts to provide comprehensive solutions for IoT and Earth observation services.

Eng. Alhamedi Alanezi expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, recognizing the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization as a leading authority in disaster management. He revealed plans for developing a joint mechanism to assist main and backup data centers in disaster recovery efforts. Alanezi highlighted Arabsat’s dedication to leveraging its capabilities and expertise to serve humanity and mitigate disaster risk.

Similarly, Dr. Saleh Al-Tuwaijri praised Arabsat’s role in reducing disaster risks and its efforts in supporting partnerships, improving communication between relevant authorities, and raising awareness about the seriousness of disasters and their impacts. He also highlighted the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization, which operates in 21 Arab countries under the humanitarian principles of the International Red Crescent and Red Cross Movement, in predicting and responding to natural disasters and mitigating their effects.
