Space Café Germany by Andreas Schepers Recap: Before the Federal Elections – The Future of Spaceflight in Germany

Space Café Germany Special: Vor der Bundestagswahl – Die Zukunft der Raumfahrt in Deutschland

In dieser Sonderausgabe des Space Café Webtalks diskutieren Torsten Kriening und Andreas Schepers mit Abgeordneten des Deutschen Bundestages über die Zukunft der Raumfahrt in Deutschland:

  • Klaus-Peter Willsch, CDU
  • Reinhard Houben, FDP
  • Dieter Janecek, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen
  • Michael Gerdes, SPD

Themenblock New Space

Space Café Germany Webtalk Special: Before the Bundestag Elections – The Future of Space in Germany

Credits: Tom Segert

In this special edition of Space Café Germany, Torsten Kriening and Andreas Schepers discuss the future of space in Germany with members of the German Bundestag:

  • Klaus-Peter Willsch, CDU
  • Reinhard Houben, FDP
  • Dieter Janecek, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (Alliance 90/The Greens)
  • Michael Gerdes, SPD

In his opening statement, Matthias Wachter of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) pointed out the central importance of space travel for the economy and society. Space is also part of the solution to meeting the challenges of climate change, he said. Wachter called for the opportunities offered by the developing NewSpace market to be seized.

The members of parliament commented on the following questions:

What role does space play in Germany for your party?

Thematic block on space strategy and space law

Who will take care of spaceflight in Germany after the elections? When will a new space strategy be formulated and when might a new space law be passed? If your party is involved in the next government, will you increase the national space budget and thus the financial scope for NewSpace and other projects for DLR space management?

Thematic block on New Space

What does the policy do to prevent the exodus of New Space startups?

Do you support the establishment of a German spaceport? Will there be support for the small satellite initiative with you?

Thematic block on sustainability and space

The G7 countries agreed in Cornwall on a focus in the area of sustainability, sustainability in space, but what does that look like for Germany in concrete terms? How should environmental protection and safety aspects be taken into account in German law, especially with regard to collision avoidance and the avoidance or elimination of space debris? How do you intend to create security in space without placing all space travel under the primacy of military thinking and action?
